It’s 54° on the island this morning and for the first time in months, the AC, fans, and dehumidifier are off. The air feels crisp and the apartment is quiet in a way I’d almost forgotten it could be. I’m curled up on the couch with my puppy tucked against my side, wearing a hoodie and fuzzy socks, feeling ridiculously happy about it. After months of heat and humidity, this little cold front feels like a gift.
Breakfast will be simple — Trader Joe’s Hashbrowns and Yogurt. I’ll fry the hashbrowns until the edges turn golden and crisp, then spoon yogurt into a bowl and drizzle honey over the top. Nothing fancy, just the kind of breakfast that hits the spot when the air finally cools.
This afternoon, I’ll bake the Pumpkin Spice Sheet Cake from Magnolia Table, Vol. 3. The smell of cinnamon and nutmeg will fill the kitchen and I’ll spread the frosting with my offset spatula, letting it fall into soft swirls. It’s not about perfect edges; it’s about the joy of making something that feels like home.
For dinner, I’ll make Country Potato Soup from Magnolia Table, Vol. 1. It’s one of those recipes that warms you from the inside out. I’ll mash a few potatoes right in the pot with my wooden spoon to thicken it just enough — a little kitchen habit that never lets me down.
Today feels like a turning point — the first real taste of fall on the island and the comfort that comes with it.
