Breakfast will begin with an Italian scramblette, peppers and onions tumbling into eggs, a skillet symphony that feels as quick as it is comforting. Some mornings call for speed, but even then, flavor doesn’t need to be sacrificed.

Dinner, though, will slow everything down. Authentic New Orleans–style gumbo will bubble on the stove, shrimp from Katie’s Seafood Market folded in at the very end so they stay tender and sweet. A good wooden spoon will be my guide, stirring the roux until it’s the color of dark caramel. That’s the secret with gumbo—patience at the stove. Rush it, and you lose the depth. Wait, and you’re rewarded with a pot that tastes like a story passed down through generations.

Chocolate chip cookies from Magnolia Table Vol 1 will close the day, classic as ever, reminding me that sometimes the best endings are the simplest ones.
